Subject: Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Tele-Pediatrics Affiliation
We are very pleased to announce that Community First Medical Center and Ann & Robert H. Lurie
Children’s Hospital of Chicago (“Luries’ Children’s Hospital”) have formalized their affiliation on telepediatrics.
Every year, our Emergency Department treats approximately 8,400 pediatric patients and transfers
approximately 360 pediatric patients to Luries’ Children’s Hospital. That figure makes Community First
Medical Center the single largest referring institution in Chicago to Luries’ Children’s Hospital. Just last
week, for example, our Emergency Department successfully revived a pediatric patient suffering from
cardiac arrest, worked in collaboration with the team at Luries’ Children’s Hospital, and successfully
transferred that patient to Luries’ Children’s Hospital.
Under the terms of the affiliation agreement, pediatric patients that present in our Emergency Department
will now have access to 27 pediatric emergency room doctors and 70 pediatric subspecialties from Luries’
Children’s Hospital. In addition to facilitating transfers between Community First Medical Center and
Luries’ Children’s Hospital, the affiliation will allow Community First Medical Center to schedule outpatient
follow-up appointments with the pediatric subspecialists at Luries’ Children’s Hospital and should
greatly reduce the number of transfers to Luries’ Children’s Hospital (thereby allowing patients to save on
costly ambulance transfer costs and the added stress of traveling downtown for care).
This tele-medicine affiliation was only made possible after Community First Medical Center completed its
installation of EPIC in January of 2018. Community First Medical Center is now the smallest community
hospital in the United States running the EPIC platform and shares a common platform with the largest
healthcare providers in Chicago, including, but not limited to, Luries’ Children’s Hospital, Rush University
Medical Center, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, Loyola University Health System, University of
Chicago Medicine, and in the very near future, the Advocate-Aurora Health System and the University of
Illinois Hospital and Health System in Chicago.
